What is Halitosis?

Chronic Halitosis is a condition in which a person produces an offensive odor from their oral or nasal regions and they’re unable to eliminate it through normal oral hygiene techniques, such as flossing or brushing. The occasional “morning breath” most people experience at one time or another is not really true halitosis. Halitosis knows no boundaries when it comes to age, sex, race, or socioeconomic levels. Furthermore, it can be truly demoralizing, and it negatively impacts the lives of as many as 50-80 million individuals in the United States alone. Because it’s such an embarrassing problem we have found that many patients are reluctant to even mention their problem to either their physician or dentist.

Causes

Although there are many medical problems, such as sinus congestion and nasal blockage, rhinitis and nasal drainage, chronic tonsillitis and other m systemic diseases can cause bad breath, these types of problems may require a physician’s help, but Chronic bad breath comes mostly from sources in the mouth. Although gum disease can be and is a significant cause of halitosis, the vast majority of bad breath originates from accumulated bacterial plaques and food coated on the back of the tongue. Anything which dries the mouth can promote bad breath, including some prescription drugs, and alcohol consumption. Therefore it is also important to keep the mouth wet and fresh all the time.

Treatment

The usual treatment of this condition includes the use of compounds containing chlorine Dioxide compound mouth rinse. In addition to special tongue scraper to keep the back part of the tongue clean from white coating and plaque.
